Logistics
The best way to reach Australia is by air, as it’s an island continent with major international airports in cities like Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane. Families can find many budget-friendly flight options with layovers in Asia, the Middle East, or the US. Flight times can be long, so booking direct or well-timed connections helps make the journey more comfortable.
Arriving by sea is possible, typically through cruise ships, though this option is less common and usually more expensive. There are no trains or buses connecting Australia to other countries due to its geographic location. When booking flights, consider weather: cyclone season (November–April) can disrupt travel to northern parts. Always check visa requirements for your family before booking.
Weather
Australia’s climate varies widely, from tropical in the north to temperate in the south. Summer (December–February) brings hot, sunny days—perfect for beach fun, but northern regions can be humid and wet, especially during the “Wet Season.” Winter (June–August) is mild in most areas and cooler in the south.
For family activities, spring (September–November) and autumn (March–May) are ideal. These shoulder seasons generally offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and outdoor festivals. Avoid visiting the tropical north during the wet months (December–March) due to heavy rain and possible cyclones, but southern cities like Sydney or Melbourne are great year-round for families.
Food & Drink
Australian cuisine blends British classics with multicultural flavors and native ingredients. Popular dishes include meat pies, fish and chips, barbequed sausages, and fresh seafood. Don’t miss trying Tim Tams, pavlova, or a morning flat white.
Family-friendly dining is widespread—look for local favorites like Sydney’s The Grounds of Alexandria, Melbourne’s Queen Victoria Market, or beachside fish-and-chip shops. Many pubs, called “hotels,” offer tasty, affordable meals with relaxed atmospheres. Casual cafes and food courts also cater to all tastes and dietary needs, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.
Tipping isn’t required but is appreciated for great service (about 10%). Tap water is safe to drink, and most venues are accommodating to kids, making Australia’s food scene relaxed and welcoming to families.

Accommodation
For family-friendly stays in Australia, consider booking serviced apartments or holiday homes in central neighborhoods. Sydney’s Darling Harbour and Melbourne’s Southbank are convenient, offering large apartments with amenities like kitchens and laundry, ideal for families. In coastal areas like Gold Coast or Cairns, beachside apartment complexes provide space and pools.
Hotels.com is excellent for comparing and booking family-sized apartments or houses in Australia. Look for properties with kid-friendly facilities in neighborhoods close to parks, attractions, and public transport. Avoid high-rise city centers if you prefer quieter stays; suburban houses or holiday parks in areas like Brisbane’s South Bank or Perth’s Scarborough are great choices.
