Logistics

Barranquilla is easiest to reach by air, with Ernesto Cortissoz International Airport offering direct flights from major Colombian cities like Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali, as well as some international connections. Taxis and ride-hailing apps connect the airport to downtown, about 25 minutes away. Digital nomads will find airport Wi-Fi and plenty of coworking spaces in the city.

Intercity buses are another budget-friendly option, linking Barranquilla with Cartagena and Santa Marta in 2–3 hours. There’s no train service, and while river travel exists for leisure, it isn’t practical for arrival. In early February, the weather is warm and dry, but if your visit overlaps Carnival, book transport and accommodation in advance due to crowds and higher prices.

Weather

Barranquilla, located on Colombia’s Caribbean coast, enjoys a tropical climate with consistently warm temperatures year-round, typically ranging from 26°C to 32°C (79°F to 90°F). Humidity is high, but refreshing sea breezes often offer relief. The city experiences a wet season from May to November, while December to April is generally drier and sunnier.

From February 4 to February 11, visitors can expect warm, pleasant days, occasional clouds, and very little rainfall due to the dry season. Extreme weather is rare during this period, making it ideal for exploring arts and culture, nightlife, outdoor adventures, and city tours. The vibrant Barranquilla Carnival, a UNESCO-listed festival, also takes place around this time, showcasing local gastronomy, parades, and exuberant celebrations.

Food & Drink

Barranquilla’s cuisine reflects its Caribbean coast heritage. Try traditional dishes like arepas de huevo, sancocho de pescado, and butifarra sausages. For drinks, aguapanela and local fruit juices are popular, while Colombian coffee is excellent everywhere.

Some digital nomad-friendly favorites include La Cueva (historic bar-restaurant), Caimán del Río (riverside food market with diverse food stalls), and Cucayo for a modern twist on classics. Cafés like Café de la Casa offer good Wi-Fi for remote work, and Bar-restaurant 54 Grill is great for groups or solo diners.

Tipping is customary but not mandatory; 10% is standard if not already included. Many places cater to vegetarians, and seafood is especially fresh during Carnival season, a peak gastronomic time. Reservations are suggested at popular venues.
