The easiest way to reach the Galapagos Islands is by flying from mainland Ecuador. Most travelers take a flight from Quito or Guayaquil to either Baltra (near Santa Cruz) or San Cristóbal airport. It’s best to book flights in advance, especially in early December, though weather disruptions are rare at this time.
There are no direct international flights or trains to the islands. Upon arrival, purchase a transit control card and pay the Galapagos National Park entrance fee at the airport. Inter-island travel is by public ferry or small planes, perfect for solo travelers on a moderate budget. Boats are the main way to explore the archipelago, and budget-friendly day tours are widely available.
The Galapagos Islands have a subtropical climate with two main seasons. The warm, wet season runs from December to May, featuring sunny days, occasional rain, and calm seas—ideal for snorkeling, diving, and wildlife-spotting. The cool, dry season from June to November brings cooler air, rougher seas, and occasional mist (garúa).
From December 01 to December 07, expect the beginning of the warm season with daily highs around 26-28°C (79-82°F), increased humidity, and short afternoon showers. Extreme weather events are rare during this period, making it a pleasant time for outdoor adventures, sightseeing, and tours—especially with wildlife becoming more active and landscapes greener.
Local cuisine in the Galapagos relies on fresh seafood like ceviche, grilled fish, and langostino (lobster), paired with local produce such as plantains and tropical fruits. Traditional drinks include fresh fruit juices and Ecuadorian beer. Vegetarian options are available, but vegan and gluten-free choices may be limited, so plan accordingly.
For solo travelers on a moderate budget, top spots include Los Kioskos in Puerto Ayora for casual, local eats, Il Giardino for international fare and seafood, and Galapagos Deli for coffee and light bites. Bar Bongo and La Garrapata are lively for drinks and socializing. Most restaurants include a 10% service charge; a small extra tip is appreciated but not required.
Tap water isn’t potable—stick to bottled water, and be mindful that menu selections can vary by season due to the islands’ isolation. Reservations aren’t usually necessary except for high-end places or peak season. Enjoy fresh, simple meals and the relaxed dining atmosphere unique to the Galapagos!
