Logistics
Switzerland is highly accessible, with major international airports in Zurich, Geneva, and Basel offering frequent flights from across Europe and overseas. For families on a budget, flying into nearby airports in France or Germany (like Milan or Strasbourg) and taking a short, efficient train ride to Switzerland is often cost-effective.
Switzerland’s extensive rail network, including direct EuroCity and TGV trains, links to neighboring countries, making train travel comfortable and scenic. Budget intercity buses also connect Switzerland with European cities. In February, expect possible snow or delays, especially in alpine regions, but Swiss transportation is renowned for reliability and comfort, even in winter.
Weather
Switzerland enjoys a temperate climate, with distinct seasons shaping its landscapes. Winters (December to February) are cold, especially in the Alps, making it a hotspot for family ski trips and outdoor adventures. Summers are mild and perfect for sightseeing, lakeside activities, tours, and vibrant nightlife in cities like Zurich or Geneva.
Between February 16 and February 28, expect wintery conditions: snow in the mountains, chilly temperatures (often below freezing), and occasional fog or rain in lower areas. Extreme weather is rare but heavy snowfall can sometimes affect higher elevations, creating excellent skiing but occasional travel disruptions. Layers and sturdy footwear are recommended for comfort and safety.
Food & Drink
Swiss cuisine delights with cheese fondue, raclette, rösti, and hearty sausages. Don’t miss Swiss chocolate and local breads like zopf, plus drinks such as Rivella or fresh Alpine milk. Many family-friendly spots offer kid menus and cozy atmospheres, like Zeughauskeller in Zurich, Hiltl (vegetarian), or Café de Grancy in Lausanne.
Supermarkets like Coop and Migros offer ready-to-eat options for picnics, perfect for families on a budget. Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory since service is included; round up the bill or leave small change. Note that restaurants may close mid-afternoon, and seasonal specialties (like wild game in autumn) are a delicious treat.
