Most visitors reach Puerto Escondido by flying directly to Puerto Escondido International Airport (PXM) from Mexico City. Affordable domestic airlines offer regular flights, making this the quickest and most convenient option. For budget-conscious digital nomads, booking in advance helps secure lower fares.
Alternatively, travelers can take an ADO bus from Oaxaca City, which takes 10-12 hours along winding mountain roads—comfortable but time-consuming. Overland journeys from Oaxaca might be slower in early February due to possible rain or fog in the mountains, so flights are preferable during this period. There are no train services or commercial boats available.
Puerto Escondido enjoys a warm, tropical climate year-round, with average temperatures between 24°C and 32°C (75°F to 90°F). The region has two main seasons: a dry season from November to May, and a wet season from June to October, when brief but intense afternoon rains can occur.
From February 1 to February 15, you can expect mostly sunny skies, low humidity, and pleasantly warm days—ideal for beach outings, surfing, and exploring local gastronomy or arts venues. Extreme weather events, such as hurricanes or heavy rains, are highly unlikely during this period, making it a perfect time for outdoor adventures and cultural experiences.
Puerto Escondido’s food scene shines with Oaxacan staples like tlayudas, mole, and empanadas, alongside plenty of fresh seafood—try grilled fish or shrimp tacos at beachside spots. Don’t miss chapulines (toasted grasshoppers) for a true local treat, and start your day with locally grown Oaxacan coffee.
For delicious eats on an average budget, visit El Cafecito for breakfast, Almoraduz for Oaxacan fusion, and Bacco for pizza with an ocean view. Bar Fly and Costenito Cevichería are popular, laid-back bars. Tipping 10-15% is standard, unless included in the bill.
Vegetarian options are common, and you’ll find many places with reliable WiFi. The best seafood is freshest November-April, and always drink bottled water.
