A Bocas Mangrove Kayak & Reef Snorkel Eco Tour
5.0 (9 reviews)
4 hours
Join me, biologist ecotour guide @stacebird, on a late afternoon paddle out of Isla Colón's Saigon Bay. We'll explore various tropical ecosystems & learn their vital importance to heathy oceans & our planet's future. We'll have opportunities to see sloths, an array of tropical birds, perhaps even monkeys. We'll paddle out of Saigon Bay for a snorkeling adventure. We will go slow, taking in the rich complexity of the coral reef as I point out & identify marine species & fascinating reef life behavior. We'll "hop" back into the kayaks; upper body strength is necessary for the this part of the excursion. If guests choose to forego snorkeling, we still can still see the beauty of the reef as we glide over it on our kayaks. We'll paddle onward through peaceful bays canals while learning about the vital importance of mangrove ecosystems while keeping an eye out for wildlife.

Logistics
To reach Bocas del Toro from Panama City, the quickest way is to fly into Bocas del Toro “Isla Colón” International Airport. Direct flights with Air Panama take about one hour. For a more budget-friendly route, take a bus from Panama City to Almirante (10-11 hours), then catch a water taxi (30 minutes) to Isla Colón.
Buses are comfortable and reliable, and the boat ride is scenic with frequent departures. During early February, weather can be rainy, which might slightly delay flights and boats, so plan some flex time. Digital nomads will find reliable Wi-Fi in most guesthouses and cafés once in Bocas, although connections can occasionally be slower during storms.
Weather
Bocas del Toro has a tropical climate with warm temperatures year-round, typically ranging from 77°F to 88°F (25°C to 31°C). Rainfall is common, but there are drier spells in February, March, September, and October. Humidity is usually high, so light, breathable clothing is recommended.
From February 6 to February 13, you can expect mostly sunny or partly cloudy days with brief, refreshing showers. This period falls during one of the drier mini-seasons, so rain is less frequent, and extreme weather like storms or hurricanes is rare. Conditions are ideal for outdoor adventures, sightseeing, and festivals.
Food & Drink
Bocas del Toro’s cuisine features fresh seafood—like ceviche, lobster, and red snapper—often cooked with coconut, plantains, and Caribbean spices. Rondon (seafood stew) and patacones (fried plantains) are popular dishes. Try local drinks like chicha (fruit beverage) and Panamanian coffee at waterfront cafes.
For tasty, affordable meals, hit up El Ultimo Refugio, Capitan Caribe for burgers, or Om Cafe for healthy options and Wi-Fi. Bibi’s on the Beach is great for sunset cocktails, while Selina Hostel’s bar is perfect for meeting other digital nomads. Tipping around 10% is customary but not mandatory.
Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly available, and many spots cater to dietary needs. Keep in mind, some restaurants may close during low season (September-November), so check hours in advance.
