Logistics

The easiest way to reach Bariloche is by flying; several daily flights connect Buenos Aires to Bariloche Airport, with affordable options if you book early. For those on a tighter budget, long-distance buses offer a scenic and economical alternative, with comfortable overnight services from Buenos Aires and other major cities.

Trains no longer reach Bariloche, but once in town, local buses cover most attractions. Travel in February is generally unaffected by weather, but be prepared for occasional rain and pack accordingly. Hitchhiking, while common in Patagonia, requires caution and patience.

Weather

Bariloche, located in Patagonia, has a cool, temperate climate. Summers (December to March) are mild, with daytime highs around 18–24°C (64–75°F) and cooler nights. Winters (June to September) can be cold, bringing snow to the surrounding mountains, making the area popular for skiing and snowboarding.

From February 1 to 15, visitors can expect pleasant summer conditions, ideal for hiking, kayaking, and exploring Nahuel Huapi National Park. Rain is possible but usually light, and extreme weather is unlikely during this period. Always bring layers, as weather in Patagonia can change rapidly, especially if you plan outdoor adventures.

Food & Drink

Bariloche’s cuisine is famous for Patagonian lamb, trout, smoked meats, wild boar, and regional chocolate. Try craft beers or hot chocolate at local cafes, and don’t miss the area’s renowned dulce de leche treats. Vegetarians and vegans can find options, but menus often focus on meat and fish.

For a budget-friendly solo trip, try El Boliche de Alberto for great parrilla (grilled meats), and La Fonda del Tío for generous local dishes at reasonable prices. Mamuschka and Rapa Nui are famous for chocolate, while Manush offers cozy vibes and craft beer. Tipping isn’t obligatory but leaving 10% is customary.

Bariloche’s food scene is casual; dress comfortably and expect friendly service. The best value is at midday lunch specials (“menú del día”), especially outside peak tourist seasons.

Stay in the downtown "Centro Cívico" area for easy access to shops, nightlife, and bus terminals. For more nature and mountain views, consider hostels in the "Arelauquen" or "Llao Llao" districts, though these can be quieter.
